An Archetype-Analysis of Buried Child by Sam Shepard
Abstract
As the only American playwright who has succeeded in carrying forward from the 1960s a concern with the irrational and the power of image, Sam Shepard is preoccupied with the personal and interpersonal dilemmas of the contemporary disordered self and his reputation has mainly established by his family plays, especially one of his family plays Buried Child. In this thesis, the author aims to make a comprehensive study of this play in three parts respectively. Part one will make a general approach of the author, exploring what success he has achieved and analyze the vital influence in his writing career. Part two centers on the theory of Carl G Jung’s archetypes and collective unconscious and analyze how these archetypes are reflected in this play. Three kinds of archetypes are discussed in this part: myth archetype, character archetype and subject archetype accordingly. In the last part, the archetypal images will be concerned. The problematic family in the play is a typical American family, which indicates the problems exist in the family is common in modern American society. Through the detailed analysis of this play, this thesis will fulfill the goal of make a comprehensive study of it. Thus give some constructive suggestions to those who interested in this play.

摘 要
山姆•謝潑得（Sam Shepard）是美國210世紀(jì)后半期最著名的劇作家之1。在他的家庭3部曲中，《被埋葬的孩子》是最廣為人知的1部。作為外外百老匯最成功的劇作家，他10分重視主觀意識與情感，在家庭劇中描繪了各個家庭成員之間、尤其是父子之間的錯綜復(fù)雜的關(guān)系。然而，這些錯蹤復(fù)雜的關(guān)系并不是孤立存在的。它不僅有著更深層次的社會與歷史因素，與劇作者自己的家庭背景、個人經(jīng)歷也有著千絲萬縷的聯(lián)系。本文將從3個方面來解析《被埋葬的孩子》。1：分析劇作家的同時期其他著作，了解這部作品的歷史意義及社會意義以及影響作者寫作生涯的主要因素。2：榮格的原型批評理論和集體無意識以及他們在該劇中的具體體現(xiàn)。3：原型意象在劇中的使用以及社會意義。
